Two months before the deadline set by the U.S. Border Patrol for completing a controversial wall between the New Mexico community of Sunland Park and the Chihuahua community of Anapra, the construction is still far from being completed. The wall is supposed to be finished by the first of March, 1997.

The wall is being constructed of solid metal underground, expanded metal for the first 1.2 meters above ground and 1 inch cyclone fencing for the last 1.8 meters for a total height of 3 meters, or approximately 9 feet, above ground. The fence runs 2,092 meters along the border and has been estimated to cost $150,000, although only $42,000 has been spent so far. According to the U.S. Border Patrol, initial construction of 90 meters of the fencing as well as the entire cyclone fencing portion remain to be completed.
