IMMIGRATION ACTIVISTS OPPOSE NEW SCHOOL POLICY

Local immigration activists in El Paso are concerned that a new request by school officials for student social security numbers could scare illegal immigrant children from registering for school. The District published registration information that indicated new students must have a social security card in order to enroll as part of their proof of residency in the district.

District officials have countered that the cards are not required and those students enrolling who do not have cards will be issued alternative registration numbers. By law, public schools must enroll any student who lives in the district regardless of immigration status.
