As school has gotten underway in communities across Chihuahua, several problems have arisen, including a severe lack of classroom space in many areas. According to a Diario de Juarez report, the deficiencies in the public schools are at a crisis level, with parents shouting demands for more teachers and schools at meetings with government officials.
As an example, the parents of elementary school children in Cuauhtemoc, Chi. began building four classrooms out of wooden pallets and cardboard in order to create a place for their children to attend school by the 9th of September, two weeks after the start of the regular school year. A donation of lumber was expected so that the construction could continue on the makeshift school that will serve around 200 children. Two teachers were working daily in the improvised classrooms surrounded by rubble. The teachers have indicated that the construction of the buildings is urgent given the overcrowding in established schools and the coming of cold weather when the children should be able to study with the protection of four walls and a roof.
