Citing his frustration and weariness with the violence and addiction that go along with the illegal drug trade, the Mayor of San Luis Colorado, Sonora advocated for the legalization of marijuana and cocaine, according to a September newspaper report in El Norte. From his vantage point, Mayor Jorge Figueroa believes that the fight against drugs has been lost and the situation demands a new focus between Mexico and the United States.
Among the advantages of legalization would be identifying addicts and treating them, taking away the economic resources of the drug dealers, but most of all ending the enormous violence that goes hand in hand with the illegal drug trade along the border. The mayor emphasized that he had come to his conclusion after spending a great deal of time thinking about the problem. In Mexico, legalization would deprive drug dealers the resources to corrupt public officials and police and would allow the government to focus on ending drug addiction.
