HEALTH CARE FOR MEXICAN RESIDENTS OF NEW MEXICO PROPOSED

The Secretary of Health for the state of Chihuahua is considering a proposal to provide services from two mobile health units to legal and illegal Mexican residents living in rural communities along the border in New Mexico. The proposal has not been finalized with authorities from the state government in New Mexico, but it is estimated that it would benefit 8,500 people who do not have access to health care. Of those, it is estimated that 3000 are indigenous.

The program was originally proposed during a working visit by New Mexico's Secretary of Health, Alex Valdez, to Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chi. and it was agreed that efforts would be made to obtain the necessary authorizations for operating the mobile units in foreign territory. Financing for the program will be sought from philanthropic organizations who help with these types of services.
