HIGH PERFORMANCE ATHLETIC FACILITY FOR JUAREZ

The construction of a new high performance athletic facility is being considered for Chihuahua State, as part of the decentralization of Mexican sports by the National Commission of Sports (Comision Nacional del Deporte, or Conade) under their plans to prepare Mexico for the next Olympics in Sydney, Australia in 2000. The announcement came from Mr. Ivar Sisniega, head of Conade, who visited Ciudad Chihuahua in late August to help kick off official activities for the Sports Promotion campaign. Mr. Ivar stated that Ciudad Juarez had been selected for the site of the Center for High Performance Athletics because of the high quality of athleticism practiced in Juarez and the quality of trainers, as well as the proximity to the United States. The project will include the reconditioning of the track at the Olympic Stadium as well as the construction of three gymnasiums in the state. The planned investment totals $1,600,000 pesos.
