The setting of From Cíbola to San Miguel is the Mesilla Valley during World War II. Four-year old Modesto is left with his great grandmother, Pilar, and ultimately spends the next five years under her care. The war ends and a year later Pilar dies. His parents finally return and instead of staying home decide to leave for "Califas" and away from the place Modesto has come to konw as home. 

El autor: 

Rafael Melendez is a playwright, poet, and short-story writer currently working on his second novel, The Keys to Cíbola, and a new play. 

Born in El Paso, Texas, Melendez enlisted in the US Navy in 1960 and stayed in California to complete his Master's Degree in Theater in 1977.

Back in El Paso by 1981, he became the technical director for music and theater at Ft. Bliss, Texas. 

Melendez has had numerous plays produced in Texas, Arizona, California and Oregon.

From Cíbola to San Miguel is his first published novel.
